How to Plan the Perfect Gulf Coast Wedding Ceremony Time (Without Missing Sunset Magic)
Planning your wedding on the Gulf Coast, from Gulf Shores to Pensacola, all the way to Panama City, means you’re already working with some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. But to really make the most of this stunning location, one thing matters more than almost anything else: your ceremony time.
Yep. That one detail can affect your lighting, your photos, your guests’ experience, and even how long the dance floor stays full. Let’s dive into how you can plan a smooth, scenic, and unforgettable wedding day timeline on the Gulf Coast.
Here’s the thing: Gulf Coast weddings are unique. Whether your ceremony is on the beach, in a garden, or at a classic venue, the timing of your day will determine what kind of light you’ll have for your photos, and ultimately, the entire mood of your gallery.
In the spring and summer, sunset usually falls around 7:15–7:45 PM. That means:
Chesnee & Carson’s Beach wedding is a perfect and stunning example of a summer 5:30PM ceremony time and how your photos will look at that time!
If romantic, golden hour beach portraits are high on your wedding wishlist (and let’s be real—they probably are), here are two timeline strategies I recommend:
Have your ceremony earlier (say, 5-5:30 PM), take your Family & Bridal Party Portraits, then a few couples photos. Take a break, enjoy your cocktail hour with guests, and plan a lil sneak away with your photographer around 7:00 PM for sunset portraits. Timing will vary wedding to wedding but this is just an example of what I typically see.
Hosting your ceremony closer to 6:30 means you’ll say your vows bathed in golden light and transition right into sunset portraits with no need to step away during the reception. It’s a more relaxed timeline and works beautifully for intimate weddings. In this situation, I do highly recommended a first look so that majority of family & bridal party photos ahead of time so right after ceremony we take sunset portaits and then go to reception.

Feeding Your Guests: A Vital Piece of the Puzzle
Here’s something a lot of couples overlook: keep your guests happy while you’re taking photos.
I recommend coordinating with your planner and caterer so that your guests are fed during your portrait time. Why? When guests have to wait a long time to eat, they tend to get frustrated—and once they do eat, they often leave before the dancing starts!
Serving food while we capture your newlywed photos is a win for everyone. Your guests are happy and social, your vendors stay on schedule, and the energy of the evening stays high.
If you’re planning a fall or winter wedding on the Gulf Coast, lighting becomes even more important. Sunset can arrive as early as 4:45–5:30 PM, depending on the month—which means timing is everything if you want beautiful natural-light portraits.
💡 My recommendation: Schedule your ceremony for no later than 3:00–3:30 PM during late fall and winter months.
Even if your ceremony is only 15 minutes long, I always plan for 30 minutes. Why? It gives you a few extra minutes to soak it all in, hug your people, and not feel rushed. You deserve to be present—and I’ll never pull you away the second you say “I do.”
With an earlier ceremony, we’ll have the perfect light for portraits afterward, and you’ll be able to roll into your evening celebration with plenty of breathing room.

There are a lot of moving parts on your wedding day – not just your photography. DJs need time to set up. Caterers need cues. Bartenders need to be ready. And planners need a timeline that keeps everything flowing seamlessly.
That’s why I work hand-in-hand with your planner to make sure your photography goals fit into the bigger picture. You don’t have to figure this out alone, I’ll help you build a timeline that makes space for gorgeous lighting, meaningful moments, and a stress-free experience.
The Gulf Coast is full of beauty, but capturing that beauty in your photos takes a little planning. From choosing the right ceremony time to feeding your guests and coordinating with your vendor team, every choice adds up to a smoother, more magical day.
So whether you’re getting married in Gulf Shores, Pensacola, Destin or Panama City – let’s build a timeline that makes the most of your location and your love story.
